20 Bands to See at SXSW 2013
SXSW Music officially kicks off today, and there are 2,000+ musical acts descending upon our fair city. If you’ve been so busy RSVPing for the multitude of free merriment around town and forgot to study up on what you’ll be watching while sipping on free cocktails, just looking over the roster of bands can make your brain hurt. To help with that, here are 20 bands to watch for at SXSW 2013.
1. Dan Croll —Think, The Whitest Boy Alive or Andrew Bird songs you can dance to. This UK-based singer-songwriter only has a handful of tunes that you can check out online, but from everything I’ve heard and seen (watch any of his live videos and you can see dude brings his A-game), he’s going to put on a helluva show.
 2. Rhye — Slow and sexy, like a warmer, more soulful take on the xx, Rhye’s debut, Woman, will be on critics best-of lists come December, and I’ll eat an empty tallboy if they’re not on most best-of lists from SXSW 2013. Frontman (yes, the lead singer is a man) Mike Milosh has what may be the most gorgeous high-octave male voice we’ve heard since Antony and the Johnsons. The LA-based duo is part of what seems to be a Sade renaissance (SEE: SXSW 2013 performers Autre Ne Veut, XXYYXX and inc. — literally, see all those too). So why go see fragile, goosebump-inducing bedroom-music at SXSW when you could be pogoing to pop music or getting beer splashed on you at a rowdy rock show? Because they sound this good live: Exhibit A and Exhibit B.
 3. HAIM —(Pronunciation pointer: It rhymes with “time.”) This trio of sisters with the last name Haim (and a drummer named Dash) were here for SXSW 2012, and they’re back as one of the most talked about acts of the past six months with a catalog of songs that sound like an Instagrammed snapshot of a summer day.
4. Cherub — You could try and stand in line for hours to see Prince, or you could go over behind the I-35 Wendy’s and see falsetto-ful electro-pop duo Cherub at SXSWendy’s. “Doses and Mimosas” is crazy fun and catchier than any song has a right to be.
5. Mitzi
6. Autre Ne Veut
7. Sir Sly
8. Unknown Mortal Orchestra — Chilled out lo-fi psych from down under (i.e., New Zealand); like a more mellow Tame Impala.
9. Jamaican Queens
10. The Neighbourhood
11. CITIZENS!
12. Little Green Cars
13. CHVRCHES — With a Wilson Phillips meets Purity Ring and The Knife vibe, the unhinged adoration of most of the music blogosphere, and a pair of stupidly catchy slick, synth-filled singles, “The Mother We Share” and “Recover,” expect the Scots of CHVRCHES to draw big numbers this week. Still, there’s really no better time to see a band on the rise than SXSW, so plan accordingly. I’m not 100% convinced they can deliver the goods live, but there’s only one way to find out (and I really want to be proven wrong).
14. Sky Ferreira
15. Youth Lagoon — For a guy who makes sleepy-sounding headphone records, Youth Lagoon can pack really ‘em in. It probably doesn’t hurt when you get to tour opening for one of the biggest indie bands in the world, Death Cab for Cutie (perhaps second only to Spoon). I’d advise catching him early at a day show if possible to avoid the bigger crowds and the inevitable battle with sleep that comes from watching pretty music after a hard day of drinking and partying. (SEE: Why we can’t go to the lovely showcases at Central Presbyterian Church anymore.) And if you’re a fan of the sound, make sure to check out Indians.
15. Gemini Club
16. Half Moon Run
17. Atlas Genius —Those still rocking Miike Snow on the reg will likely find plenty to like here. That familiar sound plus a major label (Warner Brothers) backing, a slot opening for Imagine Dragons on tour, and some Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix-esque hooks mean big things. But chance the lines if you’re into them; SXSW may be your last chance to see them in a more intimate venue.
18. Cheers Elephant
19. Wild Belle
20. Charli XCX —She was here for SXSW 2012 and already drawing decent crowds. Given that the past year has been even bigger for the goth-pop pint-sized British songstress (who’s still too young to drink in Austin bars) you can bet you won’t be alone in checking her out at any of her multiple SXSW appearances this week, especially since many local fans were unable to see her in the fall when she canceled her set at Fun Fun Fun Fest
Finally, whomever you’re going to watch, there are a few last-minute things to remember when it comes to catching the bands you want to see at the parties you want to attend:
Whether you’re wearing a Platinum Badge or just showing up for the free ride, remember that flexibility is key to maximum fun at SXSW. Have a backup plan and remember there are dozens of other awesome things going on all around Austin.
As a friendly reminder to SXSW free folks, if you’re not sporting a wristband or badge do a little research to see if the evening showcase you’re wanting to check out even allows cash-only guests. Check the SXSW site or, even better, ask the person at the door — they’ll occasionally let folks in if the badge/wristband line is less than expected and you show up early enough. We’re talking an hour or two before doors, not 10 minutes before Alt-J goes on at Stubb’s on Wednesday. (You’re probably not getting into that, by the way.)
Don’t forget to bring cash. Obviously, to tip bartenders, which can mean more than good karma — we’re talking heavy pours and more drinks than the minimum if the organizers are giving out tickets, but also to get into evening shows. Sadly, not everything at SXSW can be done for free; most official evening showcases charge a cover, which could range from $5 to $35.
If your ears are still hungry for even more new music, check out my Spotify playlist with 200 of the best bands at SXSW 2013.

  • Whether you’re wearing a Platinum Badge or just showing up for the free ride, remember that flexibility is key to maximum fun at SXSW. Have a backup plan and remember there are dozens of other awesome things going on all around Austin.
  • As a friendly reminder to SXSW free folks, if you’re not sporting a wristband or badge do a little research to see if the evening showcase you’re wanting to check out even allows cash-only guests.
  • Don’t forget to bring cash.
